When It Comes to Eating: Like Mother, Like Child

Getting kids to eat healthy foods can sometimes be a challenging task.  If you're a mother, a new study finds your child's food preferences today could be the result of what you ate when you were pregnant.
University of Colorado School of Medicine researchers made the discovery after conducting tests on newborn mice.  They found a mother's diet can sensitize a fetus to those smells and flavors and cause changes in the brain that can influence what a child eats and drinks later in life.  The study is thought to be the first to address the brain changes that happen after steady exposure to flavors in utero and early in postnatal life during breastfeeding.
Study author Josephine Todrank, PhD says her research underscores the importance of eating a healthy diet and avoiding alcohol while pregnant and nursing.
